Ghostface, alternatively stylized as Ghost Face or GhostFace, is a fictional identity assumed by the primary antagonists of the renowned Scream franchise. Conceived by Kevin Williamson, Ghostface is typically portrayed as mute in person but communicates through menacing phone calls voiced by Roger L. Jackson, employing a voice changer for anonymity.

Initially introduced in Scream (1996), Ghostface served as the disguise for teenagers Billy Loomis and Stu Macher during their killing spree in the fictional town of Woodsboro. The iconic mask, originally a popular Halloween costume crafted by Fun World costume company, was handpicked by Marianne Maddalena and director Wes Craven for the film.

Ghostface's role within the franchise is that of a shrouded figure perpetrating serial murders, its identity often obscured by a rotating cast of characters. The costume, readily accessible and not unique, allows for multiple individuals to adopt the menacing guise. Employing a voice changer, Ghostface taunts and threatens its victims, often manipulating them for its own sinister ends.

Motivations behind Ghostface's actions vary from revenge and pursuit of fame to peer pressure, with each iteration of the character possessing distinct objectives. Initially targeting Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, due to a familial revelation, subsequent installments shift focus to new targets with connections to previous events.

Throughout the series, Ghostface remains a constant, characterized by its distinctive black cloak, jagged base, and haunting white mask depicting an anguished expression. Despite its human nature, Ghostface exhibits extraordinary durability, strength, and stealth, seemingly defying conventional limitations.

Since its inception, Ghostface has permeated popular culture, inspiring countless references, parodies, and merchandise. The character has appeared in all entries of the Scream film series, most recently in Scream VI, with Roger L. Jackson reprising his role as "The Voice."

In the Scream television series, adapted as the Lakewood Slasher and the Shallow Grove Slasher, Ghostface continues to evoke fear, with Mike Vaughn providing the menacing voice, albeit with a different mask due to copyright constraints. However, the original Ghostface persona returned in Scream: Resurrection, once again voiced by Roger L. Jackson.
