The jackfruit, derived from the jack tree (Artocarpus heterophyllus), holds the distinction of being the largest tree fruit, with potential weights reaching up to 55 kg (120 pounds), lengths of 90 cm (35 inches), and diameters of 50 cm (20 inches). This tropical gem belongs to the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family (Moraceae). A mature jackfruit tree can yield around 200 fruits annually, with older specimens capable of producing up to 500 fruits per year. It's a multiple fruit, formed from the fusion of hundreds to thousands of individual flowers, and its unripe flesh is commonly consumed.

Thriving in tropical lowlands, the jackfruit tree is extensively cultivated across tropical regions, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the rainforests of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia. Ripe jackfruit offers a sweet flavor, varying depending on the variety, making it a popular choice for desserts. Canned green jackfruit, known for its mild taste and meat-like texture, is often dubbed "vegetable meat" and finds its way into various South and Southeast Asian dishes. Both ripe and unripe fruits are utilized, and the fruit, as well as derived products like noodles and chips, are internationally available in canned, frozen, and chilled forms.

Artocarpus heterophyllus is an evergreen tree characterized by its relatively short trunk and dense canopy, often growing to heights of 9 to 21 m (30 to 69 feet) and trunk diameters of 30 to 80 cm (12 to 31 inches). The tree may develop buttress roots, and its reddish-brown bark, when injured, releases a milky sap. Its alternate, spirally arranged leaves are thick and gummy, comprising a petiole and a leaf blade. Leaf blades range from oblong to ovate, with dimensions of 20 to 40 cm (7 to 15 inches) in length and 7.5 to 18 cm (3 to 7 inches) in width. Young trees exhibit irregularly lobed or split leaf edges, while older trees feature rounded, dark green leaves with smooth margins. The leaf blade typically displays a prominent main nerve, with six to eight lateral nerves originating from each side. Stipules, egg-shaped and measuring 1.5 to 8 cm (9⁄16 to 3+1⁄8 inches) in length, complete the leaf structure.
